My 2012 intentions are to get away and decompress 3 days out of each month - our days are clearly marked on the family calendar for three Purple Days per month - purple because that is the color of the pen I had handy way back in January! So this is our 4th month of Staying Connected to Purple Days with each other!

Proactive connection works better than reactive. I get it. And, what message does that send to your family members and specifically your teens and your kids? Are you teaching them to "react" to the days of the week?

Here is a midweek idea - forget about the days of the week and be mindful and present to your teenager and family ALL DAYS of the week.

Here is my personal story - not often shared;

In the past I have carried unimaginable responsibilities without a lot of support. Rather than caving in, complaining, getting into my own personal victim mentality, not thinking of them as burdens but rather opportunities....I coined a phrase to assist me in Staying Connected to ALL of my responsibilities: Here it is:

All parts are equal.

What I do with this and did with it in the past, is that I create even keel mindfulness for each and every day, minute, crisis, opportunity, random event, you name it. It keeps the complaining out of my head. Hard yes - worth it - yes!

All parts are equal and all days are equal. Each day has plenty of activity to celebrate and embrace. Stay Connected on Wednesday.

Diana - Your Family Coach

I can handle it....because every day and every breath I thank God that the "work" of The Parent as Coach Approach works.
Our Stay Connected Challenge has to do with the main focus of my book - The Parent as Coach Approach: 7 Ways to Coach Your Teen in The Game of Life. Also on audio book - imagine listening WITH your teen in the car!

And.....the Stay Connected Challenge approach is to take a deep look at what and how and why you as the parent are staying connected to.

One of the ideas we present in the book is this: if you and your teen can connect and communicate in an honest, open way using clear communication about things like laundry, house chores, driving rules, kitchen responsibilities.....then and only then will you be able to handle the tougher issues like sex, money, drugs, alcohol, dating....(go ahead and name the challenge in your family at this time...)

Today' challenge - audit your communication to see if it is with integrity, honesty and clarity. Your teen will model what and how you speak!

Onward!

Am I connected to my own family, my own commitments, my own values, my own spiritual practices, to God? Or ...the internet, being right all the time, having all the answers, texting, emailing and otherwise ...the media input 24/7?

There is no right or wrong answer -this is called an "inquiry" - taking the time to be with the question, mull it over and see how the answers over time shape up.

"What am I connected to?" Start with your wife, husband, partner or co-caregiver. Kids model parents, so try a relationship audit! How about a Friday night "date" to do a "feedback sandwhich!"
1. Each take a turn and here how it goes.
a. BREAD - one acknowledgement of a positive thing in your partner
b. MEAT or VEGGIES - one stretch you can ask of your partner
c. seven days a week. The TV shows they watch, video games they play,
songs they listen to, books they read and websites they visit are an
enormous part of their lives, offering a constant stream of messages
about families, peers, relationships, gender roles, sex, violence, food,
values, clothes, and an abundance of other topics too long to list. ...

Read the rest of this important article -
and decide if and how you are going to
Stay Connected in the Teen Years!!??

http://www.kff.org/entmedia/upload/8010.pdf

How
